According to the WWF, it takes more than 20,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of cotton. This is roughly equivalent to a T-shirt or a pair of jeans.
The cultivation of conventional cotton uses around 16% of the insecticides and 7% of the pesticides used worldwide. However, no toxic chemicals are used in the cultivation of organic cotton. Organic cultivation therefore does not damage the soil, produces fewer harmful emissions and requires on average 88% less water and 62% less energy.
All our organic cotton fabrics come from controlled, organic cultivation (kbA) in Izmir, Turkey. We do not want the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We are against wasting water and genetically modified seeds!
Certified organic cultivation (kbA) uses sustainable methods for cultivation and harvesting. Traditionally, animal and/or plant fertilizers are used and purely organic pest controls are used. Water consumption is significantly lower than in the production of conventional cotton. Controlled organic cultivation involves regular crop rotation. This means that other plants are grown on the same field between two cotton seeds. This approach not only protects against unwanted pests, but also provides food for people in the surrounding area.
