Linen is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and still combines many unbeatable advantages today. Linen is not only elegant, comfortable and skin-friendly, it is also extremely sustainable. In contrast to cotton, water consumption from the plant to the finished garment is reduced by up to 90%.
For years, ELEMENTE CLEMENTE has only used European quality linen from France and Italy, which is twisted, woven, made up and dyed in Tunisia. This results in short distances, as the entire process takes place within a radius of 150 kilometers, compared to 85% of the linen sold in Europe, which is produced in China. Our linen is produced in so-called ecological field retting – from flax, which is the name of the plant from which linen is made. Dew retting is a traditional and natural process in which the cut or shredded plant stems are laid out in a field or meadow. In the so-called roasting process, the pectins in the plant stalks are then dissolved naturally with the help of microorganisms and the solid wood components separate from the fibers. Although this process takes several weeks, it is particularly sustainable, as the released components pass into the soil and fertilize it naturally. This means that when the field is replanted, no or only minimal fertilization is required. This is good for the environment and nature.
Alternative processes such as water roasting (mainly used in China), chemical roasting or physical pulping are far less sustainable. They require considerably more water, chemicals and energy and do not even produce a comparable quality. Our linen grows easily in Europe and thus saves on transportation.
